Xã thượng and other performance of Vietnamese belief are presented as live music at the Old Quarter on weekends.

Do you think it is strange?

Yes, Water Puppet is for everybody, but especially for children. Because puppets are created like dolls with smile face and adorable body. Making you and your children laugh is its purpose.

I do not mean you should buy one puppet for your children, I mean children love puppets as dolls

When children watch Water puppet, they could spend their imagination on the maximum level.

Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

Address: 57B Dinh Tien Hoang Street, Hanoi

On the street beside Hoan Kiem Lake, near Ngoc Son temple.

Ticket is only 100.000 Vietnamese Dong

There are 400 items of the ancient Vietnamese puppetry, but only 14 original items are selected to show on performance. The performance is about 1 hour.

One performance of Water puppet is the series of short stories.

They tell the stories about day-by-day living and some fairy tales by the most friendly and interesting way.

In the past, it was created not for the political purposes or religion. It is only the entertainment of local people.

Live music.

A traditional Vietnamese orchestra plays background music accompaniment.

The puppeteers hide behind the screen to control puppets. They will come out to say hello at the end of performance.

In winter, they are willing to be on water for hours to serve you along 06 shows each day.

All of Puppets are hand-made, made by the best people. They say that each puppet have different face and emotion, no one is similar to others.

#1 Prelude of clown Tễu - Water Puppet performance

The First item:

Prelude of clown Tễu

Character Tễu:
- Tễu means "the laughter" in ancient Vietnamese.
- Have body of 8 years old- kid.
- His style of hair was called "Peach hair", the formal hair style of kids hundred years ago, but now, kids do not want to have a hair like that.

One of the most important character on Water Puppet

Stories of items:

On the opening of performance, Tễu and girls are talking together. Tễu say he used to be a person living in the heaven. One day, he break the heaven's law by stealing "Fairy peach". Then he was punished and down to become a normal people.But he jokes that the reason he becomes a normal people is that he want to help people in normal world.

Yes, may be you are thinking about Monkey King in Chinese, he also stole "Fairy Peach", but we think Tễu in Vietnam is different.

Drum is used in special festival in history of Vietnam.

This item describes the drumming performance.

Drumming performances still exist. On this item, there are only 8 drummers but in reality, there are a lot of drums used on this show.

Like the first item: Prelude of clown Tễu. This item's character is created to make people laugh by the joke with girls.

#8 Fishing - Water Puppet performance

The Eighth item:

Fishing

A man on boat is going fishing. He catches fish by bamboo fishing pole.

He smokes Vietnamese cigarette (called "Thuốc lào") with Vietnamese special pipe (called "Điếu cày")

When you go to Hàng Vải Street on the Old Quarter, you can see that all stores in that street offer "Điếu cày". Made of Bamboo.

Vietnamese people now still smoke Vietnamese cigarette ('Thuốc lào").

Next screen is another way of catching fish in Vietnamese. The man uses one thing made of rattan to catch fish (called "Nơm"). That thing still exists in countryside.
